Assistant Education Officer
Location: Belfast Zoo
Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week (may be required to work weekends depending on workload/educational events)
Pay Rate: £14.35 per hour
Key Responsibilities
- Support the development, delivery and monitoring of Belfast Zoo's education strategy, ensuring compliance with legislation, curriculum requirements, industry standards, budgets and income targets.
- Deliver wildlife, conservation and curriculum-based education programmes, including talks, tours and visitor activities.
- Assist with risk assessments and ensure all educational activities meet health & safety and industry standards.
- Provide outreach education sessions to schools, hospitals, nursing homes and other organisations, promoting the Zoo's conservation and education work.
- Contribute to teacher training courses and external engagement that position the Zoo as a curriculum-support resource.
- Help produce, update and distribute educational and booking materials, displays and event resources.
- Maintain educational resources and visual aids, including digital record keeping.
- Support the care and record-keeping of small animals used for education, ensuring high animal welfare standards and adherence to husbandry guidelines.
Essential Criteria
Applicants must, as at the closing date for receipt of application forms:
- have a minimum of five GCSEs (grades A - C) including English, or equivalent qualifications; and
- be able to demonstrate on the application form, by providing personal and specific examples, at least one year's relevant work experience in each of the following areas:
- a teaching or education officer role or similar, teaching a broad range of people from pre-school children to adults;
- the organisation of events, exhibitions or education programmes; and
- the research and preparation of display materials for exhibitions and education projects.
